2010 Saydel Color Guard!

Time Line

Starting in February color guard camps will be held at Saydel High School. The first two camps are "audition" camps and you are required to come to both if you wish to be considered. The dates have been carefully chosen to minimize conflicts with other Saydel activities. At the first camp you will receive instruction on dance basics and flag technique. At the second camp you will review skills from the first camp and then expand on those concepts. The staff also uses this camp to measure your individual growth from the first camp. (i.e. how much did you practice??) After the 2nd camp staff will make the final selections for membership for the 2010 marching season. The number of spots has not yet been determined, however, in no way are spots reserved for previous members. Once selections have been made the choosen members will need to attend the remaining camps throughout the rest of the school year. If you are not selected for membership for the 2010 season, the staff will meet with you one on one to discuss what you need to work on and ask that you audition again next year.

What's Expected

Performing in color guard is a big commitment! We openly admit that it is a lot of hard work and requires additional group rehearsal time above and beyond regular band rehearsals. That said, performing in color guard is equally rewarding and will provide great experiences and memories for years to come! We expect that if you are chosen to be a member of this highly regarded group that you have considered your schedule and are able to make the commitment. Conflicts inevitably happen; how and when you communicate them greatly determines the outcome.

At times, color guard is a very aerobic activity. As such we encourage members to jog distances working slowly up to one mile. This is something to work towards and is not required be in guard. The better shape you are in, the better control you will have over your performance once fall shows come aroundr. Just as important is your core strength. Almost everything you will do in color guard can be done better when your core is strong. Working on your core strength and general balance is a regular part of practice.
